Creating open shelves is a great way to utilise any off-cuts you may have after installing your benchtop. Rachael Turner (Front Porch Properties) used our hevea benchtops and also rounded the edges to create a stylish design feature.
To re-purpose a benchtop for wall shelving you simply need to cut the benchtop down to your desired depth, then cut again into the lengths required. You will need to sand, finish and seal the timber shelf as you would your benchtop.
Rachael used wall mounted dowel brackets which she has fixed to the wall. On the back of the shelf, Rachael has also used a router but you could use a chisel if you prefer, to check out the back of the shelves which will house the brackets. For additional security, Rachael then secured the shelf through the panel to the left of the shelf.
To create the curved design feature, Rachael used a jigsaw to cut off the corner and then sanded it back!
CAUTION: make sure you follow the instructions provided with your wall hardware precisely, and that any weight limits are considered with the shelves loaded – not simply the shelf weight on its own.
We hope you’ve been inspired to create some DIY floating shelves in your home. Get started by selecting your favourite timber, bamboo or timber-look benchtop.
